Chandigarh is called the “City Beautiful”.
It is the City of Parks and Gardens.
There are about 1900 parks and gardens where one can relax and enjoy midst of bustling day.
Le Corbusier planned them as the lungs of the city.
This garden, called The Terrace Garden (built in 1979), is an excellent example of landscaping as the entire garden is designed as terraces.
There are other beautiful gardens like Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Park, Garden of Fragrance etc.
Today is 36th Annual Chrysanthemum Show.
272 – Varieties of Chrysanthemum (गुलदाउदी) on display.
These are delight for eyes.
A large number of flora lovers attend this festival.
On an average generally more than 50 thousand people visit in 3 days of the show.
Its popularity is increasingly gaining momentum.
I believe that the flower shows like Chrysanthemum and Rose Festival have helped Chandigarh to attract a large number of tourists as well.
Flowers are an essential part of the natural world.
In many religions across the world, certain types of flowers are used to worship Gods and Goddesses.
Be it a wedding, worship or medicinal practices; flowers form an integral part of living, in Indian culture and tradition.
Flowers are also a source of income through flower farming.
I am happy to know that this is a Zero Waste festival. No plastic has been used anywhere.
Reusable and recyclable things have been used to limit waste.
All horticulture and food waste will be composted here itself.
Such events not only provide recreation but also bring the community together and also raise consciousness about preservation of the environment.
I appreciate the dedication and hard work of our maalis (gardeners) who work tirelessly to maintain these gardens and parks.
Today the Amrit Kalash Yatra has just ended at Martyrs Pillar in the garden. We paid tributes to our martyrs.
I would conclude quoting former President of India, Late Sh. APJ Abdul Kalam. He said (I Quote):
“See the flower, how generously it distributes perfume and honey. When its work is done, it falls away quietly. Try to be like the flower, unassuming despite all its qualities.” (Unquote)
Thank you,
Jai Hind!
