SPEECH OF HONOURABLE GOVERNOR AND ADMINISTRATOR, UT CHANDIGARH, SHRI BANWARILAL PUROHIT ON THE OCCASION OF AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV FREEDOM2CYCLE AT CHANDIGARH ON 03.10.2021

I am honoured to be present here this morning to flag off a Bicycle Rally and also to celebrate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in line with the initiative of the Government of India. We celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. We also recall the contributions of unsung heroes of the freedom struggle from various parts of the country.

I am glad Chandigarh is celebrating ?Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav? from 28th September to 3rd October 2021 with various activities throughout the city.

Under this initiative, Freedom 2 Cycle has been organised with an objective to encourage cycling with the aim of promoting health, safety and self-empowerment for all.

I can see the enthusiasm amongst the residents of the city beautiful, Chandigarh who are going to take a great leap forward to celebrate 75 years of Independence by participating with their full heart in the cycle rally of 7.5 km from Sukhna Lake to Shanti Kunj, Sector-16.

It is, indeed, a proud moment for all of us especially the junior bicyclists who have come out in full support for this event.

I am told Chandigarh, presently has more than 200 Km of dedicated network of cycle tracks, ready for use and easy manoeuvrability. Chandigarh can certainly be called a bicycle friendly city.

Bicycling in the city is now being facilitated by Public Bike Sharing System currently operational with 1250 Bicycles. This system must have been encouraging and convenient for those who frequently using bicycles.

The public from all walks of life is encouraged to adopt bicycling in their daily routine to commute for short distances within the city will also help them as a good health measure and will also reduce congestion on the roads and pollution in the city.

I commend the efforts of Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation for organising this event. This will go a long way in encouraging our youth to remain rooted with our ethos, culture and the supreme sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and their indomitable spirit in winning us the Azadi.

Thank you

Jai Hind.
